Yes. Rot is decay that starts where wood stays wet, and it often reaches sills, joists, beams, posts and wall framing, not only trim. We shore up the building, cut out the soft wood back to solid material, find where water gets in and fix that, then rebuild with new lumber. Deck ledgers and posts, floor framing at the foundation and the bottom of walls under failed siding are common spots. Send photos and we will tell you how far it goes.
Repair works when the damage stays limited to a few boards and the wall behind them is dry and solid. Replace the siding when boards are soft or cracked across a whole wall, or when water has reached the sheathing. In Huntsville, a deck needs a building permit unless it sits no higher than 24 inches above the ground and has no roof, or covers no more than 10 square metres and stands apart from other buildings.
